McKay Roofing was founded in San Diego's East County in 1981. For four decades it did what good roofing companies do quietly — tile, re-roofs, repairs, referrals from neighbours. More than 3,200 San Diego homes have trusted a McKay roof over that time.
In 2019 the business was acquired by Solar Integrated Roofing Corp, a publicly traded roll-up. In April 2024 we bought it back out. Today it operates as McKay Roofing and Solar, under the ownership of Nuon Energy LLC, with Jason Newby as CEO.
We say all of that plainly because you'll find fragments of it online — old listings, a Santee address, an investor database that hasn't caught up. This is the accurate version. If you've worked with McKay before, it's the same crews and the same trade. What's changed is what we can do alongside it.
We hold California contractor licence #1130793 with three classifications: B (General Building), C-10 (Electrical), and C-39 (Roofing).
That's unusual, and it matters more than it sounds. Most roofing companies in San Diego can't touch the electrical. Most solar companies can't touch your roof. Doing solar usually means two contractors, two permits, two crews and a warranty argument if anything ever leaks.
We do the roof, the panels, the battery and the wiring. One permit. One crew. When something goes wrong, there's nobody to point at but us.
We're a GAF Certified™ Contractor for residential roofing and GAF-certified on the commercial side — factory certifications only about 7% of North American roofers are invited to hold. For homeowners it means we can register your roof for the GAF System Plus Limited Warranty, with 50-year non-prorated coverage on materials. For building owners it means our commercial work qualifies for GAF's specified-system guarantees, including No-Dollar-Limit coverage.
We're a Tesla Certified Installer for Powerwall and an Enphase Certified Installer for IQ Battery — the two battery platforms that dominate San Diego homes, so we recommend the one that fits your house rather than the one we happen to sell. That matters right now more than it used to, because SDG&E's net billing rules changed the maths: power you export earns around five cents a kilowatt-hour, while power you buy back between 4pm and 9pm costs around fifty-five. Exporting is no longer the product. Storing is.

Our crews also work North County and South Orange County — Oceanside, Carlsbad, Vista, San Marcos, Escondido, Encinitas, Solana Beach, Del Mar, Rancho Santa Fe and Fairbanks Ranch, plus San Clemente, Dana Point, San Juan Capistrano, Mission Viejo and Laguna Niguel. The office stays in Mira Mesa, and every job runs under the same licence, #1130793.
Roofing, solar and battery all sit on one license here — CSLB #1130793 (B, C-10, C-39) — which is why we look at the roof before we design an array: should you replace the roof before solar?
