Between 2015 and 2023, Sunlight Financial was one of the biggest names most solar owners never noticed — the financing company behind the loan paperwork thousands of installers put in front of homeowners, including many in San Diego. On October 30, 2023, Sunlight filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection and was acquired by an investor group led by Greenbacker Capital and a consortium of solar industry buyers. It emerged from restructuring that December.

What the bankruptcy means for your loan. Almost nothing — and that surprises people. Sunlight arranged loans but the loans themselves are typically owned by partner banks and serviced separately, so your payment obligation continued right through the bankruptcy. If anything changed, it was the name on your statement or the servicing portal. If you're unsure who services your loan today, check your most recent statement or your credit report — don't stop paying while you figure it out.
What it means for your system. Here's the real problem we see: many of the installers who SOLD Sunlight-financed systems are themselves gone — Titan Solar Power, Lumio, SunPower's dealer network, and a long list of others. You can be left paying faithfully on a loan for a system nobody will service. The loan survives; the service relationship doesn't.

Do I still owe my Sunlight loan? Yes. The financing company's bankruptcy did not cancel borrower obligations. If your system doesn't work, fixing the system — not stopping payment — is the path that protects your credit.
