What happened to ADT Solar?

ADT — the security company — bought Sunpro Solar in December 2021 in a deal worth roughly $825 million and rebranded it ADT Solar. Sunpro had been one of the country's largest residential installers, and for two years ADT sold solar hard, including from a branch in Carlsbad serving San Diego County and one in Temecula just up the freeway.

Then it walked away. In November 2023, ADT closed 22 of its 38 solar branches. On January 24, 2024, it announced a full exit from residential solar, and field operations wound down by mid-2024. This wasn't a bankruptcy — ADT is very much alive as a security company — but the solar division that installed your system, with its local crews and trucks, no longer exists.

The warranty situation: real on paper, thin on the ground

ADT sold its systems with a 25-year workmanship warranty and a 25-year power production guarantee, and to its credit, ADT publicly states it will continue to fulfill warranties on previously installed systems (its solar support line is (833) 409-1007). We'd encourage you to use that — it's what you paid for.

The practical problem is that a warranty needs a truck and a technician, and ADT no longer has them in San Diego. Its BBB file shows hundreds of complaints since the exit, with customers reporting months-long waits on active roof leaks and, in some cases, no local servicing provider available to diagnose their system at all. If you have an ADT warranty claim, file it and document everything — and if your roof is leaking or your system is down right now, you may not want to wait in that queue.

The good news: your equipment is very serviceable

ADT Solar installed Enphase microinverters almost exclusively — in its later years, the IQ8 line — under panels from makers like Qcells, Silfab, and Canadian Solar, with Tesla Powerwall and Enphase batteries. Enphase is a healthy, operating company with strong equipment warranties, and Enphase systems are among the easiest for a licensed local contractor to diagnose, repair, and re-register.
