The short answer: Sunnova filed Chapter 11 and stopped installing

Sunnova Energy International, the Houston-based residential solar company, filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection on June 8, 2025 in the Southern District of Texas. In July 2025, its customer servicing platform was sold to Omnidian, a Seattle-based solar performance management company, and Sunnova's new-installation business shut down. Sunnova is not installing new systems, and the company that signed your lease, PPA, or loan paperwork is no longer the one answering the phone.

Important nuance: your solar agreement did not vanish. Lease and power purchase agreements generally remain in force, and day-to-day servicing responsibility for that fleet transferred to Omnidian. But "servicing" at national scale and "a truck in your driveway this week" are two different things — and that gap is what this page is about.

What the bankruptcy means for your system

Sunnova was unusual among the big solar names: it rarely installed anything itself. It financed systems and sold them through a network of independent dealers. In San Diego, that means your system was probably physically installed by a local dealer company, many of which have themselves closed. So there are often two dead ends, not one: the financier that filed Chapter 11, and the installer that quietly disappeared.

Here's how that shakes out in practice:

• Workmanship warranty: If the local dealer that installed your system is out of business, the workmanship warranty on the installation itself — the flashing, the wiring, the roof penetrations — is typically gone. (This is general information, not legal advice; your specific contract terms control.)
• Lease and PPA customers: Your agreement, and the service obligations attached to it, generally moved to Omnidian's servicing platform. If you have a repair covered under your agreement, start there. Where homeowners hit friction — slow response, roof work outside the agreement's scope, a reroof that needs panels off — that's where a local contractor comes in.
• Loan and cash customers: You own the system outright, and with the dealer network gone, you own the problem too. Manufacturer warranties on your equipment usually survive and are the strongest protection you still have. We handle the claim legwork with the manufacturers so you don't have to.
• Monitoring: Many customers found their app or monitoring went dark or unreliable during the transition. A system can sit underproducing for months before anyone notices. We can restore independent monitoring so you see your production regardless of who holds the servicing contract.

The equipment on your roof is still well supported

Sunnova-financed systems in San Diego most commonly carry Enphase microinverters or SolarEdge inverters, with Tesla Powerwall or Generac PWRcell batteries on newer installs. That's good news: all four manufacturers are active, and their product warranties — typically 25 years on Enphase microinverters, 12 years standard on SolarEdge inverters, and 10 years on Powerwall and PWRcell — usually survive an installer's or financier's bankruptcy. The warranty covers the part; what disappeared is the company that used to diagnose the failure, file the claim, and swing the wrench. If you have a Sunnova lease or PPA, read this first

Don't stop paying your bill on the assumption the company is "gone" — the agreement survived the bankruptcy, and the servicing platform that now administers it can pursue the contract terms. Do document any outage or underproduction in writing, request covered repairs through the servicing channel, and get an independent assessment of your roof and system condition. Whether the fix ends up covered by your agreement, by a manufacturer warranty, or out of pocket, knowing the actual state of your system is the first step — and the $399 inspection report is credited in full toward any work you hire us for.
