What happened to OneRoof Energy?

OneRoof Energy was a San Diego-headquartered solar lease provider, founded in 2011 and publicly traded on the TSX Venture Exchange from late 2012. Rather than selling systems outright, it financed rooftop solar through 20-year leases and power purchase agreements, backed early on by a $100 million Morgan Stanley fund, and marketed through channels like its SolarSelect retail program. In December 2016 the company announced it would cease operations, and through 2017 it wound down its U.S. business and sold off its solar project portfolios. In March 2017, roughly 747 residential systems and their associated leases and PPAs were sold to Greenbacker Residential Solar LLC for $8 million in cash, following earlier portfolio sales in 2016. The company itself did not survive the wind-down — but the leased systems on San Diego rooftops did, and their lease contracts transferred to new owners and servicers.

What the shutdown means for you

If OneRoof arranged your solar lease, here's the practical picture nearly a decade later:

• The workmanship warranty is typically gone. OneRoof's installer network and any labor guarantees tied to the original installation generally ended when the company wound down. (That's the typical outcome for a dissolved company — not legal advice; your specific lease terms control.)
• Manufacturer warranties usually survive. Panel warranties from the module manufacturer and equipment warranties from inverter makers like SMA and ABB attach to the hardware, not the company that financed it. Many are still in force — and McKay handles the claim legwork for you, from serial numbers to RMA paperwork. In many cases we can replace failed equipment at no cost to you under the manufacturer's warranty — our inspection report tells us whether you qualify.
• Monitoring may have gone dark. OneRoof's SunOpps portal was how many customers tracked production. If you haven't seen production data in years, your system could have been underperforming — or completely down — without anyone noticing.
• Your lease likely lives on with a new servicer. If you're still making payments, someone owns your contract — Greenbacker or a subsequent portfolio buyer. Check your billing statements to identify them, because on a leased system you'll generally want the lease owner's sign-off before equipment is modified. The equipment is now at the critical age

OneRoof-era systems went on San Diego roofs mostly between 2012 and 2016, which puts them squarely in string-inverter replacement territory. SMA Sunny Boy and Power-One (later ABB) Aurora inverters were common on installations of that vintage, and 10–13 years is exactly when they fail — often silently, if monitoring is dark. The panels themselves usually have years of life left; the inverter is the weak link. If your electric bill has crept up and you can't remember the last time you saw production numbers, that's the classic signature of a dead or derating inverter on an orphaned system.
