KOTA Energy Group is closed — here's what San Diego customers can do

  • Licensed & insured
  • In-house crews — no subcontractors
  • Written warranty on every job
  • Se habla español
  • Free estimates · $399 inspection report — credited toward your job

If you're trying to reach KOTA Energy Group about a solar system they installed, the short version: KOTA Energy Group LLC filed bankruptcy in 2025 (Case 9:25-bk-10379, U.S. Bankruptcy Court, Central District of California), and its offices — including the Carlsbad location that served San Diego County — are closed. Its public listings now show the business as closed.

McKay Roofing & Solar is not affiliated with KOTA Energy Group and did not acquire its assets. We're a San Diego contractor that services the systems its closure left without support.

What this means for your system

Nothing about the bankruptcy changed the hardware on your roof — but it did change who stands behind it.

  • The workmanship warranty is typically gone. Coverage for how the system was installed — mounting, flashing, wiring, roof penetrations — was a promise of the company that installed it, and a bankruptcy case typically leaves that promise unenforceable.
  • Manufacturer warranties usually survive. Panels, inverters and batteries carry their own manufacturer warranties, typically 10–25 years from install. Those are honored by the manufacturer, not the installer — but someone licensed still has to diagnose the failure, file the claim and do the labor. That's work we do every week, and in many cases we can replace failed equipment at no cost to you under the manufacturer's warranty. Our inspection report tells us whether you qualify.
  • Monitoring may have gone dark. If your system reported through an installer-managed account, production data may have stopped when the company did. A dark dashboard doesn't mean a dead system — but it does mean nobody's watching it.

What we can do, under one active license

McKay Roofing & Solar carries B (General Building), C-10 (Electrical) and C-39 (Roofing) on one active license — CSLB #1130793 — which matters for exactly the situations a stranded solar customer ends up in:

  • $399 system and roof inspection report — a straight answer, in writing, on what your KOTA-era system needs, and what it doesn't. Credited in full toward any work you hire us for.
  • Diagnostics and repair under an active C-10 electrical classification: inverter faults, panel failures, wiring and connection issues.
  • Monitoring restoration — getting your system reporting again under an account you control.
  • Manufacturer warranty legwork — we handle the claim paperwork and the labor.
  • Detach and reset for reroofs — when the roof under the panels needs replacing, one company takes the array down, replaces the roof and reinstalls, with roofing and electrical on the same license and one warranty across the whole job.
  • Battery retrofits — adding storage to an existing system, sized for today's net billing rules.

Why Carlsbad-area customers call us

KOTA's Carlsbad office meant real install volume across coastal North County — Carlsbad, Oceanside, Encinitas, Vista and the surrounding communities, all inside our service area. If your installer's number no longer answers, ours does: (858) 541-1097. Every repair we make carries our own written warranty, from a licensed, active San Diego contractor you can verify with the state in thirty seconds.

Have your original KOTA paperwork handy if you can find it — system size, equipment brands and install date speed everything up — but we can work without it.
