What happened to Freedom Forever?

Freedom Forever, the Temecula-headquartered company that grew into one of the largest residential solar installers in the United States, filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection on April 15, 2026, in the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the District of Delaware. At its peak the company held roughly a 6.1% share of the national residential solar market — the second-largest installer in the country in 2025 — operating in more than 30 states through a network of independent sales dealers and installation subcontractors. On the morning of the filing, roughly 1,600 employees were laid off, and customers with projects mid-installation reported stalled work and unanswered phones. Court filings listed liabilities between $500 million and $1 billion, with solar financier Mosaic — itself in bankruptcy since 2025 — among the largest creditors.

To be clear about where things stand: this is a Chapter 11 case, not a confirmed liquidation. The outcome of the proceedings — reorganization, sale, or wind-down — is decided in court. What San Diego homeowners are experiencing right now, though, is practical: service requests going unanswered and no local team picking up the phone.

First things first: McKay is not Freedom Forever

McKay Roofing & Solar is not affiliated with Freedom Forever and did not acquire its assets. We're a San Diego contractor that services the systems its bankruptcy left without responsive local support. Because Freedom Forever operated statewide through dealers rather than a single local branch, thousands of San Diego County homes carry its name on the paperwork — and many of those homeowners now need a servicer that actually operates here.

What the bankruptcy means for your system and warranties

Three things matter, and they're different from each other:

The workmanship warranty is typically gone. The labor warranty covering installation quality — roof penetrations, flashing, wiring, racking — was a promise from Freedom Forever itself. When an installer enters bankruptcy, that promise typically becomes a claim in the court proceedings rather than a service you can call in. This isn't legal advice, but as a practical matter, homeowners should not expect a truck to show up under the old workmanship warranty.

Manufacturer warranties usually survive. The good news: Freedom Forever's dealers commonly installed Enphase IQ microinverters, REC and Qcells panels, and Tesla Powerwall batteries. Those warranties come from the manufacturers — Enphase's microinverter warranty, REC and Qcells product and performance warranties, Tesla's Powerwall warranty — and they don't disappear because the installer did. They typically run 25 years on panels and microinverters and 10 years on Powerwall. The catch is that manufacturers replace parts; someone still has to diagnose the failure, file the claim, and do the labor. That's the legwork we handle for you — and in many cases we can replace failed equipment at no cost to you under the manufacturer's warranty. Our inspection report tells us whether you qualify.

Your monitoring may have gone dark. If your system's monitoring ran through an installer-managed account, it may have stopped updating — which means a string outage or a failed microinverter can go unnoticed for months while your utility bill quietly climbs. Enphase and Tesla systems can almost always be re-pointed to a homeowner-controlled account; we do this routinely.

If your system is owned by a third party — a lease or PPA through a financing company — that company remains responsible for the system, but many San Diego lessees are finding response times slow. We can still perform diagnostics and coordinate with the finance company on your behalf.
